Irish Gems

Nigel, Ade, I hope you dont mind me starting another thread on here to keep the boards a little bit interesting if we can.
Things have slowed down a little so until we get some more positive news of Madeleine and other missing children, we need to chat about something to keep it breathing on here.
I know Kate and Gerry have a liking for Ireland and I suppose being Catholic would have a little bit to do with that.
The Irish bring a wonderful gift into the Catholic Church with their culture and gentle manner generally.  I thought I would kick start with Irish Musicians and people like that.

My very first posting will be on RORY GALLAGHER.

A much loved in Ireland and elsewhere for that fact, musician.
An expert on the Fender Stratocaster and in particular good at Blues.
Oh boy, he was SO good. I think I have almost every album he produced. His style was raw and rather unique.  For now, I will put a lovely picture up on here of him.
I sincerely hope I am not breaking any Copyright rules doing so, I dont think I am and I hold a torch for him in tribute to this gentle and lovely Irishman who brought so much joy and happiness to people who liked his kind of music.
His passing even brought Van Morrison to his funeral amongst a hoard of fans and mourners.
A great tribute from one great musician to another.

No problems, M.  Was Van Morrison Irish?  He sung 'brown eyed girl, didn't he?  Never was a fan of Irish folk music though, like in 'The Dubliners' and stuff.  And the Pogues, urgh!

Hey vee8,

Dont diss the Van, hes one of the greats and has made some fantastic music. Loads of film score as well.

Of course your right about The Pogues the only good thing they did was the fairy tale of Newyork and they can keep Daniel O'Donnell furious furious

m from m there is loads of good irish music and a lot of romantic stuff as well, bring me Enya for a romantic night in anyday

No, Van was born in Belfast. An Irishman through and through. I think he is full of Soul. I love  his voice, I love his style.
The problem with the radio is they play the same things over and over if a musicial gets onto the Commercial field. One perfect example IS 'Brown Eyed Girl' and another is Queeens' 'Bohemian Rhapsody' and yet another 'Stairway to Heaven by' LZep (NO you twerps NOT the Rolf Harris version !! ha ha)

I too cannot take to Daniel O'D - absolutely NOT my taste in music.

As for Rory, he did mainly Bluesy stuff. He was born in Ballyshannon but spent a lot of his life In Cork.  Now, Rory was Southern Irish and Van Northern. That says a LOT about the respect Van had for Rory because Rory was Southern Catholic and he toured over the whole of Ireland right in the middle of the
troubled times, and made a live recording,  'Irish Tour 1974'. It can now be bought on DVD which every Rory fan would have. If you like blues, have a taste of Rory on Youtube and wait till he does his solo bits.

Van Morrison and Rory Gallagher were well know and both of them Loved in the North and South of Ireland. I love Irish music and have lots or CD's. Van was born in 125, Hyndford Street of the Beersbridge Road in troubled East Belfast and just below Bloomfield. He started of in a group which was called "THEM" a very popular group in the North Of Ireland. One of their songs was "Gotta Go".They got together just after the Beetles and the Rolling Stones in 1964. The group broke up and Van then became a popular solo artist and still is today. Daniel, we love Daniel, he is a lovely guy. His singing is loved by the older generation.. There are tours organized to a hotel in Donegal where Daniel sings and goes around speaking to everyone, he is so kind. My father went on the tour and stayed over night in the hotel, he always enjoyed his hospitality.. Being as I am not old and still 21yrs, I have not ventured on this tour??????
My favourite Irish Song is The Irish Rover.   Although I am from the North I am still an "Irish Gem"

Daniel is not my cup of tea to be honest but a friend of mine thinks he is the cats whiskers and I looked up something on his site for her once and there she was, his WIFE and their wedding pictures and everything. I think hes just a very squeeky clean singer and as Bubbles said, much loved by many fans particularly the older generation of ladies.

Has anyone on here heard of Christy Moore - my he IS good, what a lovely deep voice and a wonderful Irish accent. Hes not too keen on Catholics but I like his music and saw him once. He was with a group called Planxty.

I found that one of the best collections of Irish music would have to have been the Commitments sound track, and of course Enya is also fantastic.

Enya, yes!  Beautiful, and really haunting and melodic music.  Is she still recording?

Yes, I like Enya, she's very atmospheric isnt she. A lot of good music has come out of Ireland.

Has anybody here happened to listen to much Chieftains stuff? It took me a little while to latch on to it. They are very talented, but like a drink of Baileys, I wouldnt want to drink it all the while and so it is with the Chieftains. Very good when in the mood.

I was sorry to hear of the death of one of the members of The Dubliners recently as well, -Ronnie Drew.
He was the one who did the main singing and had a lovely big grey beard. A lovely man from what I can make out on what I have seen and heard.

God rest his soul.

So, where to now folks?

Kate Bush is Irish.
She's like Marmite, you either love her or you hate her.

Me? I LOVE her. Yes, she screeches like a banshee but with such passion and she is SO 'arty farty', and thats me I'm afraid.

I have a few of her albums.

'Ariel' is a fantastic arrangement of musical ability and she has ceased screeching as in the olden days. Like I say, I love her ! A VERY talented artiste.
